Part-Time Shop Assistant

Assisting in our retail store and our weekly workshops 

Preserved is growing! Our kitchen and fermentation shop in Rockridge is looking to expand our team with a friendly, motivated part-time shop assistant. If you're passionate about cooking, curious about fermentation & food preservation, and love helping people discover new skills, this could be the perfect fit. In addition to assisting customers and keeping the store running smoothly, you'll also help support some of our hands-on workshops and create an inviting, educational atmosphere for everyone who walks through our doors.

The Schedule: 

  • Part time, 15-25 hours per week (3-4 days)

  • Weekend availability required (both Saturday and Sundays)

  • Flexibility to cover additional shifts as needed

  • We also require your full support and availability during our busiest season between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve


What You’ll Do As A Shop Assistant:

This is a dual role. Your schedule would be comprised of 1-2 days per week as a retail assistant, and 1-2 days per week as a workshop assistant. 


Retail Assistant Role

  • Drive sales through personable customer engagement in store 

  • General shop management: Closing duties, assisting customers, product suggestions, managing the cash drawer. 

  • Receive and process inventory: Unpacking deliveries, receiving items, adding price tags to each and every item, organizing back stock as needed. 

  • Inventory management: restocking the sales floor throughout the day, merchandising and keeping things tidy.

  • Assisting with Online Store order fulfillment

  • Daily shop cleaning: mopping, vacuuming, dusting and taking out the trash & recycling.


Workshop Assistant Role

  • Prepare Workshop Space: Set up our event space for our workshops. Gather and distribute supplies and class handouts. Ensure the dish area and bathrooms are ready for students by replenishing soap and paper towels.

  • Student Interaction: Greet and check in students as they arrive, ensure they’re comfortably settled and distribute aprons.

  • Taking Photos and Videos: Capture moments during the workshop to post in our Instagram stories during or at the end of class.

  • Class Assistance: Wash, dry, and put away dishes. Support the teacher and students as needed.

  • Reset for the next day: Vacuum, mop, and wipe down tables and surfaces.


Qualifications: 

  • 2-3 years retail and/or food service (FOH) experience

  • Experience using G Suite and POS systems  

  • “Hobby-level” experience in 1-2 home ferments

  • Ability to squat and bend, stand for long periods of time, and lift up to 40lbs

  • Open availability on both weekend days


Compensation:  

  • $20 / hour
