Workshop & Events Manager

About the Role

The Workshop & Events Manager owns the coordination and growth of Preserved’s Workshops and Events Program. This role sits at the intersection of education, retail, community, and operations; ensuring that workshops run smoothly, teachers feel supported, students rave about their exceptional experiences and the program continues to grow.

We are looking for an organized, proactive, people-oriented leader who can move comfortably between operational details and big-picture program development. They are confident in working independently, building relationships with instructors and staff, identifying opportunities for improvement, and bringing fresh ideas to the business.

The Workshops and Events Program is deeply connected to our retail shop. The Workshop & Events Manager will become cross-trained in retail operations and collaborate closely with the Shop Owner and Retail Manager to create meaningful connections between the shop, its products, and the educational experiences Preserved offers.

Key Responsibilities

Workshop & Event Operations

  • Assist with workshops on weekends, and audit weeknight workshops to develop a strong understanding of both the teacher and student experience during your first 6 months.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of our Weekly Workshops with our growing team of 12+ teachers.
  • Coordinate, book and host our Community Friday night events; deepening relationships with our vendors, guest speakers, and community members. 
  • Coordinate the bookings and logistics for Private Event inquiries and identify ways to market and grow these offerings.
  • Own the administrative systems that support the workshop and events program, including posting classes, event documentation, communications, staging guides and workshop resources.
  • Send timely communications to key stakeholders and event participants.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workshop processes, systems, and support structures.

Teacher Development & Relationships

  • Build strong, ongoing relationships with Preserved instructors and serve as the primary point person regarding workshops and events.
  • Develop a deep understanding of individual instructors’ teaching styles and curricula.
  • Build a reciprocal partnership with teachers, advocating for both Preserved’s educational goals and the instructors’ success.
  • Schedule one-on-one meetings with teachers as needed to provide support, share feedback, and collaborate on updates.
  • Plan and execute semi-annual teacher development meetings.
  • Onboard new teachers and develop their classes following Preserved's educational vision, expectations, and brand.

Team Communication & Management

  • Manage and support our Workshop & Events team, identifying areas that need additional support, resources, or training.
  • Collaborate to develop monthly team meeting agendas, lead staff training and contribute meaningful discussion points.
  • Keep staff informed about upcoming events, including undersold classes, and other relevant program updates.
  • Build and refine systems to help staff confidently navigate workshop and event responsibilities.

Retail Operations & Collaboration

  • Become fully cross-trained in Retail Assistant responsibilities.
  • Develop familiarity with Preserved’s culinary departments including tools, pantry products and fermentation starter cultures.
  • Drive sales through personable customer engagement in store. 
  • General shop management including closing duties and managing the cash drawer. 
  • Assist in unpacking deliveries, receiving items, tagging inventory, organizing back stock as needed. 
  • Restocking the sales floor throughout the day, visual merchandising and keeping things tidy.
  • Mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and taking out the trash & recycling.

Leadership, Strategic Collaboration & Growth

  • Provide strategic updates, observations, and recommendations to the Shop Owner and Retail Manager.
  • Contribute to the long-term vision, strategy, and growth of the workshop and events program.
  • Develop a robust understanding of the Workshop & Events team's needs and advocate for the resources necessary for success.
  • Identify, develop, and implement new class and event ideas; and opportunities to cross-promote workshops and retail offerings.
  • Balance operational excellence with creativity, flexibility, and a strong sense of Preserved’s brand and identity.

You become increasingly autonomous in identifying and solving problems. Rather than waiting for direction, you notice what could work better, develop a thoughtful solution, and put it into practice. You know when to make a decision independently and when to bring an issue or opportunity to the management team. Ultimately, success means ownership. You are not simply coordinating the Workshop & Events Program, you are a leader, helping to drive Preserved’s growth. 

Qualifications: 

  • 2+ years of Management experience in one or more of the following: Event Coordination; Culinary Education; Hospitality/Retail; Community Programming
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and thoughtfully.
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and both weekend days for the first 6 months
  • Proficient in G Suite 
  • Experience with Shopify (POS) and Notion (project management tool) is a plus.
  • “Hobby-level” experience in 1-2 home ferments
  • Ability to squat and bend, stand for long periods of time, and lift up to 40lbs

The Schedule 

First 6 months:

  • ~35 hours / 5 days a week / Wednesday-Sunday
  • Wednesday-Friday 12-8:30pm
  • Saturday & Sundays 10:30am-4pm
  • We also require your full support and availability during our busiest season between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve

Beyond 6 months:

  • 30-40 hours 
  • Monday-Friday (with flexibility to work from home)
  • We also require your full support and availability during our busiest season between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve

Compensation

  • $25 / hour for the 6 months; Salary growth to $60K-$75K
